Solid State Double Data Rate (SSDDR)
SSDDR is the first innovative memory and SSD board design that combines Serial ATA Solid State Drive (SATA SSD) and Double Data Rate Synchronous Dynamic Ram (DDR SDRAM) technologies in a single SODIMM socket. This dual function memory module is an optimal solution for many Single Board Computers (SBCs), ETX, COM Express and AdvancedTCA-based applications. The combination of the DRAM and Industrial compact flash solutions found on most embedded systems provides benefits in cost, size and designer flexibility as compared to traditional rotational disk drives.
The use of the existing SO-DIMM connector reduces cost and reduces the volume needed by a typical standalone SSD module. SSDDR is available in DDR2 and DDR3 SDRAM formats and with flash capacities from 8 GB to 32 GB. SSDDR is a perfect complement to embedded flash as it provides an upgrade path for deployed systems and configuration flexibility since a regular SO-DIMM can be used if flash storage is not needed for an application. The use of a module to carry both the memory and storage subsystems simplifies the system test requirements resulting in lower integration costs.
The SATA interface to the SSD portion is implemented in previously unused pins on the JEDEC standard SO-DIMM connector. SATA is becoming the interface of choice for embedded SSD designs due to its high speeds, noise immunity and large supplier base.
