Telecommunications

As voice, video and data communications place heavier demands on the telecommunications infrastructure, more intelligence is being designed into switches, routers and PBXs. This intelligence is provided by embedded processors with powerful memory subsystems.

Case Study

Virtium was asked to conduct a memory design study for a leading manufacturer of industrial computers that specializes in embedded computing and communication technology.

Virtium performed a detailed analysis on pricing and memory market trends comparing the viability of commodity PC memory (unbuffered DIMMs) to server memory (registered DIMMs) when using a chipset favoring registered DIMMs. The study showed registered DIMM were less widely-available and more costly than unbuffered DIMMs, so Virtium made a design modification to the lower cost PC memory. This was engineered with additional logic and resulted in a more cost-effective solution with the same functionality as a registered DIMM.
